NEW MATERIAL:Optically active α-[(α-methyl-3,4-dimethoxyphenethyl-amino) methyl]-2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol of formula I. n USE: Medicines having improved hypoglycemic action. n PROCESS: Dl-α-[(α-(methyl-3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamino)methyl]-2-benzyloxybenzyl alcohol of formula II is optically resolved to give optically active α-[(α- methyl-3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamino)-methyl]-2-penzyloxybenzyl alcohol, which is then catalytically reduced to form the objective compound of formula I. A diastereomer having a melting point of 104W105°C is preferred as the dl-isomer raw material.
