NEW MATERIAL:A mixture of 17C branched dihydric alcohol esters of formulas I-III (R is hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyalkenyl, >=1C alkyl or >=2C alkenyl). EXAMPLE:Di-acetate of a 17C branched dihydric alcohol mixture. USE:Useful as an oil base of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, etc., a base of emulsions, and an industrial oil such as lubricating oil. It is colorless, tasteless, and odorless, and has excellent stability to heat, light, etc., chemical and physical stability by aging, low melting point, and low skin-irritation and high skin-affinity when used as an ointment. PROCESS:The compounds of formulas I-III are prepared by reacting diol compounds of formulas IV-VI or their reactive derivative with saturated straight-chain carboxylic acids, etc., e.g. at 150-250 deg.C, in a solvent such as benzene, pref. in the presence of a catalyst such as sulfuric acid. |
