abstract NEW MATERIAL:A quinoxaline derivative of formula I (R 1 is H, methyl, ethyl, m-chlorophenyl, or m-tolyl; R 2 is Cl, ethylamino, or propylamino; R 3 is H, Cl, methyl, or nitro; R 3 is substituted to 6- 7-position of quinoxaline). n EXAMPLE: 2-(m-Chlorophenyl)-3-hydroxyquinoxaline. n USE: Herbicide having rapid contact effect to weeds such as cockspur-grass, and harmless to transplanted paddy-rice plant, wheat, etc. n PROCESS: A compound of formula II is made to react with a compound of formula R 1 COCOOH to afford a compound of formula III, which is then reacted with a compound of formula POCl 3 to obtain one of the compound of formula I wherein R 2 is Cl, i.e. the compound of formula IV.
