NEW MATERIAL:An ester of a side-chain higher dihydric alcohol of formula I (R1 is lower alkyl; R2 is >=7C alkyl, alkenyl, or hydroxyalkyl; n is 6-10). EXAMPLE:An 7-alkyl-octadecane-1,18-diol-dicapric acid ester. USE:Useful as a base for oils for cosmetics or medicines, or emulsions. PROCESS:A diol of formula II or its reactive derivative is esterified by the conventional method with a straight-chain >=8C saturated higher fatty acid, hydroxy higher fatty acid, etc., to obtain a compound of formula I. For practicing the reaction mentioned above industrially, the reaction mixture is preferably agitated, under the stream of nitrogen at about 220-240 deg.C for several hours. |
