abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the object chlorinated component in high yield and purity, by photo-chlorination of the side-chain methyl group of o-xylene or o-tolunitrile, in the presence of a hexamethylphosphor-amide in the reaction system. n CONSTITUTION: The side-chain methyl group of o-xylene or o-tolunitrile is photo- chlorinated in the presence of a hexamethylphosphor-amide in an amount in the range of 10W5,000ppm based on the reaction liquid weight, preferably at 50°C or above, with a possible light source, e.g. sunlight, incandescent lamp, or mercury 1amp.
