abstract | NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are H or OH-protecting groups) or its derivative wherein the hydroxyl groups are protected. n USE: A pharmacologically active compound having bone metabolism and intestinal calcium absorptice action on mammals. n PROCESS: 24,25,26-Trihydroxycholesta-5,7-diene of formula II or its derivative wherein the hydroxyl groups and protected is irradiated with ultraviolet light (200W 360nm) to form 24,25,26-trihydroxyprevitamin D 3 or its derivative having protected hydroxyl groups, which is isomerized in aninert solvent, e.g. hexane, at -20W 120°C by thermal energy.
