abstract NEW MATERIAL:Polymerizable amphoteric compounds of formula I [R 1 is H, or methyl; R 2 is substituent mainly consisting of 8W30C hydrocarbyl; R 3 , R 4 are substituents mainly consisting of hydrocarbyls of 2 - 7 carbon atoms; R 5 is equal to R 1 ; A is COO(CH 2 ) n (n is 1 - 4), CONH-(CH 2 ) n , incorporate with R 3 or R 3 and R 4 to form heterocyclic ring]. n EXAMPLE: The compound of formula II. n USE: Surface active agents, especially suitably for emulsion polymerization since these compounds have hydrophobic hydrocarbyl groups and hydrophilic ammonium and sulfite groups, further both anionic and cationic groups in one molecule. n PREPARATION: The reaction of an oxirane compound of formula III as 2-ethyl- hexylglycidylether, sulfur dioxide and a tertiary amine of formula IV as dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate is conducted in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor under normal or elevated pressure, when necessary, in a solvent to produce the objective compound of formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1979,JPO&Japio
