titleOfInvention Purification and recovery of n,n'-disubstituted bipyridium
abstract PURPOSE: To recover the title substance useful as herbicides with a specific ion exchange resin in a high purity from an oxidation reaction mixture obtained by treating a N,N'-disubstituted tetrahydro 4,4'-bipyridyl with an aromatic nitro compound in the presence of water. n CONSTITUTION: A N,N'-disubstituted tetrahydro 4,4'-bipyridyl, preferably N,N'- dialkyltetrahydro-4,4'-bipyridyl, e.g. N,N'-dimethylterahydro 4,4'-bipyridyl, is treated with an aromatic nitro compound, e.g. nitrobenzene or nitrotoluene, in the presence of water to give the corresponding N,N'-disubstituted 4,4'-bipryridium. The resulting aqueous solution containing the N,N'-disubstituted bipyridium is brought into contact with a weakly acidic cationic exchange resin, preperably having carboxyl groups, adsorbed and recovered by a mineral acid to give the title substance. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1979,JPO&Japio
