abstract | PURPOSE: The reaction between methyl p-toluate and ammonia is conducted in the presence of an ammonium salt of strong acid as a catalyst at an adequate temperature to produce inexpensively title compound useful as an intermediate for dyes and pigments at high reaction rate in high yield. n CONSTITUTION: In the reaction between methyl p-toluate and an excess amount, preferably 1W10 times the molar quantity of p-toluate, of ammonia, 5W30 mole% of an amminium salt of strong acid with a pK of less than 1 as ammonium chloride or ammonium nitrate is used as a catalyst to yield p-toluic amide. The methyl p- toluate is prepared by esterifying p-toluic acid resulting from the oxidation of p- xylene with air with methanol. n EFFECT: Ammonium salts as catalysts are inexpensive and readily available in large amounts. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1979,JPO&Japio |
