abstract | NEW MATERIAL:A 3,5-dihydroxy-2-hexylhexadeca-7,10-dienoic 1,3-lactone of formula I and 3,5-dihydroxy-2-hexylhexadecanoic 1,3-lactone of formula II. n USE: Antiesterase active substances having enlarged inhibitory enzyme groups compared with esterastin, a particularly powerful anticholesterol activity, and expected possibility of application as a remedy for thromosis and arteriosclerosis in addition to arthritis and rheumatic fever. n PROCESS: Esterastin of formula III: [R is CH 3 -(CH 2 ) 4 -CH=CH-CH 2 -CH=CH-CH 2 or CH 3 -(CH 2 ) 10 ] or tetrahydroesterastin is hydrolyzed with an alkali to give the objective compound of formulas I and II.
