abstract PURPOSE:To provide a cheap oxygen capturing compsn. contg. an alkali metal sulfide and SiO2 and/or Al2O3 which compsn. can freely control its heating rate and amt., absorbs O2 smoothly, and does not generate any harmful gas such as SO2. CONSTITUTION:The alkali metal sulfide used in this compsn. includes sulfides and polysulfides of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, etc. and their hydrates. Na2S 9H2O is effective and cheap. By varying the ratio of the sulfide to SiO2 and/or Al2O3, O2 absorbing speed and amt. can be controlled. A water insol. or slightly water sol. filler inert to the compsn. may be added to the compsn. to improve control of O2 absorbing speed and amt., gas permeability, etc. The filler includes activated carbon, iron oxide, CaO, synthetic resin powder, etc. This compsn. is e.g. used to preserve food in a hermetically sealed container. Since the color of the compsn. is changed by absorption of O2, the degree of freshness of the contents in a package can be judged according to the color.
