NEW MATERIAL:A phenoxyphenoxycrotonic acid derivative of formula I: [R 1 is H or halogen; R 2 is OH, Ocat (cat is cation of inorganic or organic base), amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, or phenylamino group (phenyl nucleus may be substituted by alkyl group or halogen)]. n EXAMPLE: Sodium γ-methyl-γ-[4-(4'-trifluorophenoxy)phenoxy] crotonate. n USE: Herbicides quite safe for broadleaf crops, such as Japanese radishes, soybean, peanut, cotton, flax, and beets, having excellent selectivity of kill true grass weeds, such as barnyard grass and large crab-grass, characterized by the methyl group at the γ-position. n PROCESS: A phenoxyphenol of formula II is reacted with a crotonic acid of formula III: (X is halogen) in the presence of a base to give the objective compound of formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1979,JPO&Japio |
