abstract PURPOSE: To prepare a p-xylene-rich title mixture useful as a raw material of terephthalic acid, etc., by contacting toluene and methanol with a catalyst comprising an L-type synthetic zeolite or its metallic cation substiture, under heating. n CONSTITUTION: The title mixture is prepared by the catalytic reaction of toluene with methanol in the presence of a catalyst comprising an L-type synthetic zeolite or its metallic cation substitute, under heating (at 150W300°C), pref. in gaseous phase. The catalyst, which has a composition of the formula (M is Na, K, etc., n is valence of M), can be prepared by crystallizing a mixture of potassium aluminate and silica sol, or a mixture of potassium aluminate, KOH, NaOH, and silica sol. The metallic cation substitute of L-type synthetic zeolite is obtained by substituting the K, Na, etc., of the above catalyst with H, Mg, La, Ac, etc. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1979,JPO&Japio
