abstract 1383734 Wet separation of particular materials CRANE CO 30 Jan 1973 4648/73 Heading B2H Particulate mixed, e.g. spent, ion exchange resins are reclassified into separate cation and anion exchange resin fractions by introducing the mixed resins into the top of a vertical column of liquid in which the cation and anion exchange resins settle at different rates of. fall, thereby separating into distinct fractions which are separately collected, the reclassification being enhanced by maintaining a laminar downward flow of liquid in the vertical column. The laminar flow of liquid operates to streamline the particulate resin flow and limits random vertical movement of the particles resulting in a reduction in the total number of particle collisions. Moreover the downward flow of liquid enhances the settling of the larger as compared with that of the smaller particles: The liquid used is preferably water and the laminar flow has a Reynolds number of between 200 and 2200. A resin-receiving vessel is preferably provided above, and adapted to communicate with, the vertical redassification column and an upward current of liquid is set up in this vessel to effect backwash of the resins to remove the fines and/or preliminary redassification of the resins prior to their passing from the vessel into the column. Reclassification may also be enhanced by increasing the buoyancy of one of the types of resins in the vertical column by maintaining a dispersion of air bubbles in the liquid therein and contacting the particulate resin with a hydrophobic, aerophilic flotation agent which selectively adheres the cation or anion resin to the air bubbles. Flotation agents specific to anion exchange resins may include a polyamine alkyl sulphate, xanthate, dithiophosphate, dithiocarbamate or an arenesulphonate. Flotation agents specific to cation exchange resins may include a polyacrylamide, primary amine, quaternary amonium salt, primary ammonium, alkyl-pyridinium salt or a thiocarbanilide. A suitable plant is described.
