(57) [Problem] To provide a vertically aligned nematic liquid crystal display device having improved viewing angle characteristics with a small number of retardation films. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal cell, a pair of polarizing films arranged above and below the liquid crystal cell so that their absorption axes are perpendicular to each other, and one or two polarizing films between at least one of the liquid crystal cell and the polarizing film. What is claimed is: 1. A vertically aligned nematic liquid crystal display device comprising a viewing angle compensating retardation film composed of two retardation films, wherein the viewing angle compensating retardation film has an in-plane retardation (R). A retardation film having a retardation (R ') value in the thickness direction of the film of not less than 100 nm and a retardation (R') value in the film thickness direction of not less than 100 nm, wherein the slow axis in the film plane is equal to the absorption axis of the adjacent polarizing film. A liquid crystal display device which is parallel or perpendicular to the liquid crystal display. |
