titleOfInvention Implantable hearing aids
abstract SUMMARY A hearing aid (10) includes an implantable microphone (28), a signal processing amplifier (30), a battery and a microactuator (32). Amplifier (30) amplifies and processes the signal from microphone (28) for application to microactuator (32). The microactuator (32) is implanted to mechanically oscillate the perilymph fluid (20a) in the patient's inner ear (17). The transducer (45) of the microactuator (32) is preferably a stress-biased PLZT 2-8 mil thick disk. These disks are preferably mounted as tympanic membranes in connection with a flexible diaphragm (53, 56, 57), for example in a threaded metal tube (46) having a diameter of 1.4 mm and a length of 2.0 mm. The tube (46) is implanted in the window at the promontory (18) of the patient's inner ear (17). Securing the disc-shaped transducer (45) in the tube (46) which has a larger diameter than the window and is also filled with fluid (58) results in hydraulic amplification of the displacement of the transducer. The microphone (28) is preferably constructed from a thin sheet of PVDF overlaid with inert metal electrodes (42a, 42b).
