abstract (57) Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for producing a DNA fragment encoding a silk protein from a silk-producing spider. The present invention also relates to DNA sequences encoding spider silk proteins. The present invention further relates to a method for producing a spider silk protein using the above DNA sequence. The method for cloning and producing the protein of the present invention can be applied to all silk-producing spiders. Clones developed by these methods produce commercially available quantities of high molecular weight silk proteins. Because the silk made from such proteins has excellent strength, the cloned silk proteins of the present invention have significant industrial importance.
