titleOfInvention Implantable external auditory system with floating mass transducer
abstract (57) Abstract: A floating mass transducer for assisting human hearing is provided. Inertial vibrations in the floating mass transducer (100) cause vibrations in the inner ear. In one exemplary embodiment, a floating mass transducer includes a magnet assembly (12) and a coil (14) fixed within a housing (10) mounted to bone in the middle ear. The coil is more rigidly fixed to the housing than the magnet. The magnet assembly and the coil are configured such that conduction of an alternating current through the coil causes the magnet assembly and the coil to vibrate in relation to each other. This vibration is caused by the interaction of the magnetic field of the magnet assembly and the coil. Because the coil is more rigidly fixed to the housing than the magnet assembly, vibration of the coil causes the housing to vibrate. The floating mass transducer can generate vibrations in the inner ear by being attached to the skull or attached through a mouthpiece.
