titleOfInvention | Medical device treated with hydrophilic polymer composition |
abstract | (57) Abstract Medical devices for use as artificial hearts, artificial coronary arteries or artificial blood vessels, such as heart valves, aortic coronary artery bypass grafts, and arterial grafts are provided. The described device is at least partially coated or impregnated with a hydrophilic polymer composition, which is desirably 1 to 99% by weight moisture, preferably It contains 50 to 95% by weight of water. The hydrophilic polymer composition is biodegradable and preferably comprises polyurethane. Optionally, the hydrophilic polymer composition comprises a pharmaceutically active agent, such as an anticoagulant, a thrombolytic or an antibiotic. The device may be treated with two or more hydrophilic polymer compositions in separate coatings, with three-layer coatings being especially beneficial. The presence of the hydrophilic polymer coating is beneficial in reducing thrombus formation that may occur after implantation of the device. |
