(57) [Summary]nSecretory gland cells, particularly pancreatic and salivary gland cells, are genetically altered so that a mammalian subject effectively incorporates a gene that expresses a protein having a desired therapeutic effect. The expressed protein is directly secreted into the gastrointestinal tract and / or the bloodstream to obtain a therapeutic blood level for the protein, thereby treating a patient in need of the protein. Transformed secretory cells provide a long-term treatment for diseases that are deficient in certain protein deficiencies or susceptible to overexpression of the protein. |
