abstract |
An improved rapid method is provided for making microporous and mesoporous materials, including airgels and preceramics. The gel or gel precursor is enclosed in a sealed container to prevent structural expansion of the gel during the heating process. This confinement significantly accelerates the gelling and drying process and significantly reduces the time required to produce a dried airgel compared to conventional methods. Drying is performed by subcritical drying with a pressurized fluid to release the liquid from the gel pores, or by supercritical drying. The rates of heating and depressurization are significantly higher than in the conventional method. |
