abstract (57) [Problem] To provide a method for selectively producing a biphenyl derivative using inexpensive raw materials. SOLUTION: 2-Phenyl-4-oxocyclohexane-2-enecarboxylic acid ethyl ester is reacted with a halogenating agent to give 4-chloro-2-phenylcyclohexa-ethyl. A mixture of ethyl 2,4-dienecarboxylate and ethyl 4-chloro-2-phenylcyclohexa-1,3-dienecarboxylate was obtained, followed by elimination of chlorine to give ethyl 2-biphenylcarboxylate, Produce 2-biphenylcarboxylic acid.
