abstract A method and apparatus for determining a position of a probe within an anatomical region of a patient. A magnetic probe used with a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus includes an electron spin resonance (ESR) magnetometer. The position of probe 1 is determined by the ESR in the probe. It is tracked by measuring the resonance frequency of the sample. The resonance frequency is measured in the presence of a gradient sequence using three orthogonal linear gradients. By determining the resonance frequency of the ESR sample in the presence of each gradient, the position of the probe can be determined. The probe can be placed on or in the object, and the position of the probe can be displayed on a desired magnetic resonance image of the object.
