The present invention provides an extremely useful compound that can be used as a luminescent dye layer of a coating material for an electroluminescent display device. SOLUTION: embedded image (In the formula, the benzimidazolyl group is located at the ortho position of the hydroxy group, and m and n each represent 0, 1 or 2, provided that m and n do not both represent 0.) Diol compounds.
