abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a built-in scanner with a memory and a control circuit for managing the memory so as to enable a scanner detachable to the main body to be used as a handy scanner completely independently of the main body. In this case, power consumption in the scanner is prevented. SOLUTION: The facsimile apparatus is provided with a scanner 9 which can be detachably attached to a facsimile apparatus main body 5 and which can be used as a handy scanner alone. The scanner 9 has a reading unit 111 for optically reading an image. An image memory 108 for storing image data read by the reading unit 111, and a second CPU 10 for controlling the memory 108. 0, and the second CPU 100 is in a sleep mode when no data is stored in the memory 108.
