abstract (57) Abstract: Provided is a method for vitrifying a powdery material, and an apparatus for performing the method. The method comprises the steps of introducing a powdery material into a melting zone of a furnace from the side by an injection means in a direction including a horizontal component, where it is introduced by at least one plasma torch to obtain a melt. The removal of the melt from the furnace by overflowing through a casting zone which is melted and more or less along the horizontal component and which is remote from the means for injecting the powder into the furnace with respect to the melting zone.
