abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove a carboxylic acid protecting group X of a β-lactam derivative having a protected carboxyl group represented by the general formula (1) as a reusable alcohol and to remove the carboxyl group from the above general formula (2) The present invention provides a technique for efficiently producing a carboxylic acid of a β-lactam derivative without using an expensive reagent. SOLUTION: General formula (1) A-COO-X (1) (wherein A represents a β-lactam derivative residue. X is a benzyl group or a phenyl group having an electron-donating group as a substituent on a phenyl ring) A diphenylmethyl group which may have an electron-donating group on the ring.) The carboxyl group-protected β-lactam derivative is treated with aluminum halide in an ether solvent to obtain a compound represented by the general formula (2): A-COOH (2) (wherein A is as defined above), a process for producing a β-lactam derivative, wherein the leaving group X can be recovered and reused as X-OH. .
