titleOfInvention Continuous method for producing ethylbenzene using liquid-phase alkylation and gas-phase transalkylation reactions
abstract (57) [Summary]nThe present invention relates to a method for producing ethylbenzene using liquid-phase alkylation and gas-phase transalkylation. The liquid phase alkylation reaction can be catalyzed by acidic solid oxides such as MCM-22, MCM-49 and MCM-56. The gas-phase transalkylation reaction can be catalyzed by an intermediate pore size zeolite, such as ZSM-5. By continuously introducing a new benzene feed containing at least 500 ppm of non-benzene hydrocarbon impurities, the process can be performed continuously. Mixtures of the ethylbenzene products of these alkylation and transalkylation reactions have very low levels of xylene, hydrocarbon compounds having 7 or less carbon atoms, and hydrocarbon compounds having 9 or more carbon atoms.
