(57) [Summary] Buffering agents for hazardous waste compositions of iron carbide, containing electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) and water, are dolomite lime, ie, dolomite lime, dolomite monohydrate. Includes either lime or dolomite dihydrate lime. Dolostone lime acts as a buffer for hazardous waste compositions by maintaining the pH of the waste composition within a target range where the solubility of some heavy metals is likely to be minimized. These heavy metals include lead, zinc, and especially cadmium. The pH range at which these heavy metals achieve minimal solubility is from about 8.5 to about 11.5, and preferably from 9.4 to 10.2. Further, dolomite lime is substantially water-insoluble, so that the buffer does not leach out or diffuse out of the waste composition. |
