Dynamic particle size control for delivering aerosolized drugs |
abstract |
SUMMARY The present invention relates to an apparatus, packaging, and method for producing an aerosol. This device is a self-contained device (40) that automatically operates at the same point of discharge during the patient's inspiratory flow cycle. The release point is calculated by a microprocessor (26) receiving data from the flow sensor (31). This device is loaded with a cassette of rupturable individual containers (1) of the pharmaceutically active drug. By activating the device, the drug passes through the porous membrane (3) of the container having pores ranging from about 0.25 micron to 6.0 micron. The membrane is flexible so that as the formulation hits and passes through the membrane, it projects outwardly beyond the flow boundary layer of the flow path (29). |
