titleOfInvention Linear decibel variable gain amplifier
abstract A gain control circuit (22) provides linear decibel gain control for an RF signal variable gain amplifier (12). The gain control circuit (22), to produce a logarithmic relationship between the gain control circuit (I G) and amplification bias current (I C), utilizes a transconductance characteristic of the bipolar transistor. The gain control circuit (22) includes a current mirror, which is composed of two transistors (Q1, Q2) and a resistor (R1) connected between the base terminals of the two transistors (Q1, Q2). Has become. The third transistor (Q3) and the resistor (R2) are provided to absorb the gain control current ( IG ). The gain control current ( IG ) is supplied to the base of a first transistor (Q1) of the two transistors so that a voltage is generated across the resistor. This voltage is subtracted from the base-emitter voltage of the second transistor (Q2), thereby causing a corresponding exponential decrease in the current through the second transistor (Q2). This current (I C ) is supplied to a gm stage (12) having a gain that is linearly proportional to this current. Therefore, the linear change in the gain control current (I G) gives rise to exponential change in the gain of the gm stage (12), whereby the linear decibel variable gain amplifier is achieved.
