titleOfInvention | Method for hydrophilizing hydrophobic polymers |
abstract | (57) [Summary]nMake the surface of an essentially non-polar or only slightly polar and hydrophobic polymeric plastic or rubber material polar or more polar and hydrophilic, amine-containing functional groups, and ultimately durable and non-separable A method is disclosed wherein an adherent, slippery polyurethane or polyurethane / urea hydrogel coating may then be applied to the polymer surface. The method includes a dual plasma treatment of a polymer plastic or rubber substrate material; a first treatment using an oxygen-containing plasma gas, wherein hydroxyl, carboxyl, and carbonyl groups are added to the substrate surface. Immobilization, thereby making the surface more polar and active; and a second treatment using a nitrogen-containing plasma gas, which immobilizes amine or amino groups on the substrate surface to make it more hydrophilic. Reactive to terminal isocyanate groups of polyurethane or polyurethane / urea prepolymer adduct intermediates, which are then applied to the substrate surface and converted to a durable, non-separating, slippery hydrogel coating And The method is particularly suitable for hydrophilizing essentially non-polar and hydrophobic polymeric plastic materials such as polyethylene, nylon-11 and nylon-12. |
