abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide 2-hydroxy-5-norbornene-2-carboxylic acid, and eventually 2-hydroxy-5-norbornene-2-carboxylic acid by using spiro norbornene dioxolanones using a raw material which is easy to handle at the industrial level. Enables easy production of norbornanone. SOLUTION: 2,2-disubstituted-5-methyl-1,3- Dioxolan-4-one is halogenated followed by dehydrohalogenation to give 2,2-disubstituted-5-methylene-1, 3-Dioxolan-4-one was obtained, and the resulting 2,2-disubstituted-5-methylene-1,3-dioxolan-4-one was subjected to a Diels-Alder reaction with cyclopentadiene or dicyclopentadiene to give spiro [ 5-norbornene-2,5 '-(2', 2'-disubstituted-1 ', 3'-dioxolan-4'-one)] is obtained, and the spiro compound is hydrolyzed to give 2-hydroxy-5. -Norbornene-2-carboxylic acid is obtained.
