PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling self-ignition in a four-stroke engine including variable control of opening and closing of intake / exhaust control means in a combustion chamber, particularly variable control as a function of load of the engine. A method for controlling auto-ignition in a four-stroke engine of the present invention minimizes the mixing of burned gas with fresh gas and controls the amount of burned gas remaining in the combustion chamber. In order to achieve this, the long-term residual phase of the burnt gas in the combustion chamber (a) is combined with the phase of the fresh gas intake cycle (b) which generally follows the residual cycle and is carried out at partial load.
