abstract (57) Abstract: A gene encoding the following peptide (a) or (b): (a) a peptide consisting of the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1; (B) a peptide comprising an amino acid sequence in which one or several amino acids have been added, deleted or substituted in the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 and having HMG-CoA reductase activity; A method for producing a carotenoid, which comprises introducing the gene into a yeast together with a carotenoid biosynthesis gene and culturing the yeast in a medium to obtain a carotenoid from the culture; A method for producing a carotenoid, which is introduced into ndida utilis and expressed; a yeast into which the above gene and a carotenoid biosynthesis gene have been introduced. According to the present invention, a gene useful for increasing carotenoid production is provided. By introducing the gene into yeast together with the carotenoid synthesis gene group and expressing it at the same time, useful carotenoids can be produced in large quantities.
