PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently treating a gas stream containing hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide. A burner (4) and a furnace (6) are operated to produce a gas mixture comprising hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, water vapor and sulfur vapor from a feed gas stream comprising hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. In the condenser 16, sulfur vapor is extracted instead of water vapor. In the reactor 22, all of the hydrogen sulfide is oxidized to sulfur dioxide (or all of the sulfur dioxide is reduced to hydrogen sulfide). The obtained gas mixture is dried by the dryer 30 and compressed by the compressor 32. The gas mixture is then fractionated in distillation column. The top fraction substantially free of sulfur compounds is discharged, while the bottoms fraction is Can be recycled. |
