abstract (57) [Problem] To provide a method for producing a water-insoluble polysaccharide sponge and a sponge obtained by this method. SOLUTION: The method of the present invention comprises the steps of (a) supplying an aqueous solution of a soluble polysaccharide, (b) freezing the solution, and (c) subjecting the frozen solution to a water-miscible organic solvent such as isopropanol. (D) drying the resulting polysaccharide by treating water to replace the water in the frozen solution with the solvent. The organic solvent contains a crosslinking agent such as calcium chloride, and makes the polysaccharide water-insoluble in the solvent replacement step (c). The resulting material is more flexible and not brittle than freeze dried polysaccharide sponges.
