abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rolling element structure for a toroidal type continuously variable transmission and a toroidal type continuously variable transmission which are excellent in surface separation resistance and rolling surface fatigue strength and can have a long life. Provided is a method of forming a surface coating of a rolling element structure for use and a lubricating composition for a toroidal type continuously variable transmission. SOLUTION: In a toroidal type continuously variable transmission, a surface of a rolling element for torque transmission is provided with a 0.0. 1 to 10 wt% zinc dithiophosphate, 1 to 5% by weight of a metal antioxidant; A film having a thickness of 5 to 500 nm was formed by sliding in a lubricating oil containing 1 w to 5 t% of a metal-based detergent / dispersant.
