abstract | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide R-(+)-and S-(-)-2-phenoxypropionic acids ([RI] and [S-) useful for optical resolution of RS-2-methylpiperazine. It is an object of the present invention to provide an optically resolving method of RS-2-phenoxypropionic acid [I] which can be applied industrially to obtain I)). SOLUTION: R-1-benzylamino-3-phenoxy-2-propanol.R-2-phenoxypropionate [RR-III] or S-1-benzylamino-3- Phenoxy-2-propanol / S-2-phenoxypropionate [SS-III] is dissolved or suspended in an organic solvent, and a small excess amount of an aqueous alkali solution is added thereto with stirring to give a double decomposition to form R-2-phenoxy. R- or S- is obtained by extracting an alkaline salt of propionic acid or an alkaline salt of S-2-phenoxypropionic acid into an aqueous layer, and acidifying and separating the extracted layer. 2-phenoxypropionic acid ([RI] or [S- I]) is filtered or extracted with an organic solvent to obtain optically pure 2-phenoxypropionic acid ([RI]).
