abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a starting characteristic and an excitation efficiency by optimizing a positional relationship between an excitation coil 3 or an arc tube 2 and a liquid W, and to improve sterilization and purification effects. SOLUTION: An arc tube 2 and an excitation coil 3 for exciting the arc tube 2 are accommodated in a translucent outer tube 6. Translucent outer tube 6 Is submerged in the liquid W to be sterilized. Arc tube 2 Alternatively, the excitation coil 3 is separated from the liquid W by 10 mm or more. By separating the electromagnetic wave generated by the excitation coil 3 by 10 mm or more, the influence of the liquid W on the electromagnetic wave generated by the excitation coil 3 is reduced.
