abstract (57) [Abstract] [Purpose] To provide a bidirectional communication element capable of receiving and transmitting a plurality of media in a single chip. [Structure] On an n-InP semiconductor substrate, a directional coupler type WDM coupler 1, a 1.3 μm band semiconductor laser, a laser monitor PD, a 1.3 μm band semiconductor light receiving element, a Y branch, and 1.55 μm. The band semiconductor light receiving element is integrated. A directional coupler type WDM coupler in which a signal obtained by wavelength-multiplexing a 1.3 μm band signal and a 1.55 μm band signal is a wavelength discriminating element is used as a 1.3 μm band signal and a 1.55 μm band signal. . .mu.m band signals are discriminated and received by the 1.3 .mu.m band semiconductor light receiving element and the 1.55 .mu.m band semiconductor light receiving element, respectively. This makes the integrated circuit suitable for receiving and transmitting a plurality of media. Moreover, since the directional coupler is used as the WDM coupler, the device can be realized in a smaller size as compared with the case of using the Mach-Zehnder type or the like.
