titleOfInvention Method for producing highly transformable bacterial cells and cells produced thereby
abstract (57) [Summary]nThe invention provided herein relates to a Gram-negative bacterial cell containing a gene encoding an enzyme having a carbohydrate-decomposing activity and adapted to become competent for transformation. The carbohydrate degrading enzyme used in the present invention includes α-amylase. The competent cells of the present invention can be frozen for long-term storage. The invention also relates to a method of rendering Gram-negative bacterial cells, such as E. coli cells, competent for transformation. The method involves transferring a gene encoding an enzyme having carbohydrate degrading activity into E. coli cells and then rendering the cells competent using any of a variety of competence methods.
