abstract (57) [Summary] A fluorescent cavity backlight system that provides a highly efficient light source suitable for backlighting a transmitted light electronic display device. The fluorescent cavity backlight system according to the invention can be adapted to a wide variety of flat panel display applications. This invention takes a complete system approach towards the design of high efficiency backlight sources. The backlight system comprises three main subassemblies, a phosphorescent emitter (14), a fluorescent cavity (16), and improved control / drive electronics (22). Each sub-assembly is optimally designed in itself, and is also optimally designed in relation to each of the other sub-assemblies.
