How to oxidize carbohydrates |
abstract |
(57) [Summary]nThe present invention employs less than an equivalent amount (eg, 10 mol%) of periodate and recycles periodate in another reaction chamber during the reaction to remove carbohydrates from periodate in an aqueous medium. A method of oxidizing with salt is provided. Periodate is preferably electrochemically regenerated. This oxidation advantageously results in a dialdehyde carbohydrate in which 30 to 85% of the available groups have been oxidized to dialdehyde groups. |
