abstract | (57) [Summary] [PROBLEMS] To provide a magnetic recording disk which is suitable for high-density recording and has both excellent running durability and improved reproduction output, and a magnetic recording / reproducing method using the disk. A magnetic layer having a thickness of 1 μm or less formed by dispersing hexagonal ferrite powder in a binder is provided on at least one side of a non-magnetic flexible support, and the magnetic layer is carbon black. And the amount of carbon black contained from the surface of the magnetic layer to a depth of 1/2 in the thickness direction of the magnetic layer is More than the amount of carbon black contained from the depth of 1/2 of the magnetic layer to the support side, the maximum magnetic flux density of the magnetic layer is 1500 gauss or more, and the coercive force is 1000 to 300. A magnetic recording disk of 0 Oe. Using the above magnetic recording disk, the shortest recording wavelength is 1.5 μm in the magnetic layer of the disk.
