(57) Abstract: A carboxylic acid amide is produced with high selectivity by hydrating a nitrile using a manganese dioxide catalyst having high catalytic activity. When permanganate is subjected to reduction treatment with a polycarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof under acidic conditions, water-soluble polycarboxylic acid or a salt thereof is added in an amount of 0.5 to 5 per mol of permanganate. Manganese dioxide is obtained by treatment with mol at a temperature of 5-80 ° C. The polycarboxylic acid includes water-soluble aliphatic polycarboxylic acid such as oxalic acid. The carboxylic acid amide can be obtained in high yield and selectivity by hydrating the nitrile in the presence of a manganese dioxide catalyst. Examples of the nitrile include α-cyanohydrin compounds such as lactonitrile and 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanenitrile. |
