abstract (57) Abstract: A catalytic converter in which a metal monolith supporting a catalyst is stably fixed to a metal casing, and a method for producing the same. A catalytic converter of the present invention comprises a metal monolith (1) carrying an exhaust gas purifying catalyst, a metal casing (2) and a monolith holding material (3), and the monolith (1) comprises: The monolith holding material (3), which is made of ferritic stainless steel foil and has a honeycomb structure, and which directly supports the monolith (1), has an alumina fiber mat compressed in the thickness direction and the alumina fiber mat is uniformly impregnated. The organic binder has a specific restoring surface pressure when the organic binder is thermally decomposed.
