abstract |
(57) Abstract: A manganese dioxide catalyst having reproducible catalytic activity for a nitrile hydration reaction is obtained. A manganese dioxide catalyst is obtained by reducing permanganate with a polyhydric alcohol. The polyhydric alcohols include aliphatic polyhydric alcohols having about 2 to 10 carbon atoms such as mannitol, glycerin, erythritol, sorbit, and mannitane, and non-aromatic cyclic polyhydric alcohols. The carboxylic acid amide can be obtained in high yield and selectivity by hydrating the nitrile in the presence of the manganese dioxide catalyst. Examples of the nitrile include α-cyanohydrin compounds such as lactonitrile and 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanenitrile. |
