(57) Abstract: An oxychlorination method for producing chlorinated hydrocarbons by reducing the production of polychlorinated aromatic compounds is provided. An oxychlorination method for producing a chlorinated hydrocarbon using a C 1 -C 3 hydrocarbon reactant as a starting material, wherein the reactant is contacted with oxygen or an oxygenated gas and hydrogen chloride. Wherein at least a portion of the hydrogen chloride to be consumed is obtained from an external source other than recovered by thermal decomposition of the product produced by the oxychlorination process, and the contacting is at 150 ° C. Carried out in the presence of an oxychlorination catalyst in a heated reaction zone operating at ˜600 ° C., chlorinated hydrocarbons are recovered from the effluent of the reaction zone and hydrogen chloride by means for the removal of aromatic hydrocarbons.
