R 2 , OCN, CF 3 , OCF 3 , OCF 2 H, OCH 2 C F 3, R 2: C1~12 alkyl, alkenyl C2-12, cyclohexane ring liquid crystal composition containing the novel compounds and which is represented by the trans configuration). [Effect] The solubility of this compound is greatly improved as compared with a compound having an ethane bond as a corresponding linking group. Moreover, it exhibits excellent characteristics in electro-optical characteristics such as a large reduction in refractive index anisotropy and threshold voltage. Further, it can be easily produced industrially and is extremely chemically stable. Furthermore, a compound containing a plurality of fluorine atoms and containing no cyano group is suitable for active matrix driving because it can obtain a high specific resistance and a voltage holding ratio in addition to a low driving voltage. Therefore, it is useful as a practical liquid crystal display material.
